    Oh hello there…

I am a mom of 3 beautiful girls, a wife, lawyer, podcaster, former nurse, children's book author, over-committer, recovering Mormon and two-faced Gemini.

I make self-deprecating and sometimes funny videos on the Instagram and world wide web. I can be in court in a suit one day and filming myself in a leotard the next, gyrating and attempting the splits (still working on it) and just trying to make people laugh. A true Gemini.

I started this platform (aka ReallyRealMama) because I wanted to. So you should do whatever the fuck you want to do too, unless it’s illegal or morally questionable.

My guiding principle in life is to be free to be whoever you are and don’t apologize for it. Life is simply better that way.

To walk fully and confidently in one's skin. To feel in complete alignment with one's values and higher purpose. To exude presence and simply radiate.

It's what I help women do. I wish I could say I always felt like that but it was a 40+ year-long JOURNEY for me to step into authentic confidence. It took a breakdown in my life for me to break through. I spent two decades in design leadership in the apparel industry, working for brands such as Nike, Pendleton, and Adidas. When my daughter fell inexplicably ill, it forced me to step out of the grind and led me on a three-year-long journey of healing, spirituality, science, and learning about true human potential.

During my design career, I loved infusing customer desires with brand identity, then envision it through the lens of global trends to finally create garments that delighted and sold.

As much as I tuned into the wants and desires of customers, I often denied myself my own wants, pushed my own needs past the next deadline, waited to be discovered, or given permission to follow my dreams. Only after I had to leave my work behind, was I able to redefine myself and step into true confidence and follow a dream and own my mission: Using apparel as a vehicle to empower women and girls around the globe.

I created a unique approach that will help you reconnect with your desires, uncover your purpose and support you in unleashing the woman you know you can be. Inside and out.

It's not a one-size-fits-all approach. It's a soulful journey where you'll learn life-long skills and wisdom that will guide you for the rest of your life.

As part of my larger mission, I am working on a passion project - launching Koryphae, a clothing line for conscious women by conscious women.

I believe that when we wear clothes crafted with love and care, made from materials carefully selected for their energetic frequencies and environmental impact, it doesn't only uplift ourselves, but everyone around the globe who helped make them.

Dena began her yoga practice over 30 years ago whilst pregnant with the first of her 4 children. Over the years, her practice transformed from the occasional dabbling for fun and stress relief to a dedicated, daily, traditional Ashtanga Yoga practice. After many years spent adapting life changes and to injury, her practice shifted to include a movement as rehabilitation and strength supported mobility focus.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, she moved to Portland in 2006 so her kids could grow up with the majesty of the North West in their veins and salt water on their skin. In Canada, she was a midwife for many sleepless years. Now retired from midwifery, she has more time for her family, her yoga practice, and teaching.

As a yoga instructor she can be found teaching at multiple locations in the Portland area including 10 years and running as a Yoga Instructor at Nike World Headquarters. She has worked in groups and one-on-one with world renowned athletes, including NBA Allstars Global Elite runners and Lebron James. She has consulted in product development, and has studied and applied cutting edge performance advances for the discriminating athletes at Nike and beyond.

Dena is the yoga instructor for Laika Film Studios onsite Health and Wellness Program. Currently she can be found teaching in person Yoga classes at YoYoYogi and Bay Club Portland.

She has administered and instructed in multiple world-wide yoga teacher trainings, both 200 hr and 500 hr levels.

Dena's classes are informed by her many years of practice, both yoga and as a midwife, and her deep love and continuing study of the body's structure, function and dysfunction, both subtle and gross. She specializes in a more athletic, intelligent, and inquisitive class that is challenging, empowering, as well as deeply therapeutic.

“People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. ... I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.” — Joseph Campbell

"There is nothing more fulfilling than watching a person come alive with hope, possibility and ignited passion for life. Whether it be in front of the camera or within the safe space of a workshop setting, witnessing the human soul come alive inspires me.”

My career through line is communication. I’ve been a teacher, counselor, instructional designer, manager and recruiter. When I’m not at my writing desk, you might find me in the kitchen micro-grating ginger root and lemon zest into everything or playing euchre with my husband and son and our three dogged cats, one for each lap.

I am food-obsessed. I am in love with people. Nothing turns me on like a table full of bold food and everyone getting real while breaking bread. This is what drives me. Inspiring others to find their home through tasting, making, loving. Food is for nourishment and connection. I want more people to find the pleasure and rootedness that I have found through food. I love to inspire my guests and clients to do the same--to connect with their cravings, notice the relationship between their aliveness and their food, and take pleasure in the act of making and sharing food with themselves and others.

  • I am a former tech executive, freelance writer, violinist, and actor/model living in Portland. I am a mom to three amazing adult children, two rescue dogs, and a horse. I am an empty nester(ish) and a widow. My life makes most sense when broken into chapters.

My first chapter was spent in Silicon Valley during the dot com boom, working at tech startups after graduating from Stanford with a degree in Symbolic Systems (which just means I’m really good at noticing patterns.)

My second chapter took me out of the tech bubble and into the world of babies and toddlers and co-op preschools and PTAs and teaching violin and freelance writing about raising kids. This chapter is a blur of beautiful chaos.

In my third chapter I realized I didn’t want to raise a family in the Bay Area. The Pacific Northwest had been calling to me so I convinced my husband and three kids to leave California for the place I knew deep down was home. Once our roots were firmly planted in the Oregon soil, I felt a pull to return to the tech world. Thirteen years after stepping off the corporate track I jumped back in and enjoyed some of the best years of my career, holding senior management positions at Jive Software, Puppet, and New Relic.

My fourth chapter started rather abruptly with the death of my husband. This is where you will find me currently, learning to understand that grief and joy can coexist, discovering who I really am when no one is expecting me to be something, and pursuing my dream of acting. As incongruous as it may sound, I believe wholeheartedly that I am on the upward arc of the “U” curve of happiness.

I am blessed to work with the creative energy of the female body. The female body is designed to be creative. I have learned a wealth of information about creativity from working in this place.

I’m a women’s health physical therapist, founder of Holistic Pelvic CareTM for women, and author of Wild Feminine: Finding Power, Spirit & Joy in the Female Body, Wild Creative, and Mothering from Your Center. I’m in awe of the potential in our female bodies and passionate about cultivating the creative energy that is meant to run through all aspects of a woman’s life. I draw upon mine daily in mothering three gorgeous sons and making my way in the world.

It wasn’t always like this. I began my work as a Women’s Health Physical Therapist in a hospital setting. As I used the physical medicine of my profession, and saw the incredible results for women’s health, I was surprised that the profession is hardly known-in part because most practitioners work in hospital settings where clients come by referral from a urologist. Therefore, a woman would have to go to a urologist to even discover this aspect of women’s health.

I left my job in 2000 to be at home with my first son, and soon after started my own private practice. I loved the freedom of designing my own practice of women’s care. It allowed me to be more creative as a professional, to be a present mother, and to offer my services to a wider array of women as my word-of-mouth practice grew exponentially.

I have a master’s degree in physical therapy and many other advanced bodywork trainings, but my real pelvic medicine evolved when I tapped into my ability to read energetic patterns of the body (the more subtle layer beneath the physical). I developed a practice of care that works in alignment with each woman’s own body and core patterns. Over time, I created my own bodywork practice combining physical and energetic tools called Holistic Pelvic CareTM. I am thrilled to be teaching Holistic Pelvic Care to talented women’s health practitioners across the country. I know first hand the power of this medicine to help women heal and thrive in the creative center.

I think of myself as providing a bridge between the realms of modern medicine and traditional women’s wisdom so that we can apply this ancient energy to our modern lives. My goal is to teach every woman how to read the physical and energetic patterns of her pelvic bowl and restore access to the full range of creative resources–this beauty and wildness within.
